My typography education has contributed a great amount to how I am able to communicate through my designs. Studying typography has allowed me to gain skills in visual hierarchy, information architecture, and the relationship between text and image that all enable me to successfully compose and structure my digital designs.

typography as information

project criteria

Perfect a visual dialogue between structured and unstructured typographic elements within a frame – composing ideal relationships between type as image and type as information/text in these relationships type as image takes priority in the hierarchy – responsible for imparting information to the viewer and posing a question to be answered by the type as information/text your concept provides additional imagery and an opportunity to enhance and unify the information while engaging the viewer.

Mahler Symphony Orchestra Poster Final Design

final design

In this final design, the main focus of the typographical layout was surrounding alignment. I worked with the grid of thirds both horizontally and vertically on the page. I used cutoff techniques and assuming placement of letterforms to insinuate a gap of negative space in the title that connects the composer, date, and location of the event to the overall theme of the poster. By utilizing different weights of the typeface, attention is placed on the headlines and more prioritized text. The verticality created by the photography both opposed and harmonized with my alignment of type.
